COMPUTING – THE KEY TO OPEN THE TREASURE OF KNOWLEDGE FOR THE BLIND

COMPUTING – THE KEY TO OPEN THE TREASURE OF KNOWLEDGE FOR THE BLIND

“Computing technology becomes the bridge that leads students into the fascinating world of colors and brightens up their futures with the intellectual torch”...

Today, with the advancement of technology and science, the blinds have the opportunities to gain access to the modern technology products and services to serve their study, working, entertaining, and communicating needs.

Recognizing the important role and the benefits that computer technology contributes to education as well as provides supports to the blinds, Thien An Shelter focuses on the training of computer skills at the same time develops useful products for the students at the shelter as well as for the community. In 1998, Professor Nguyen Quoc Phong partnered with the group of Dinh Dien, M.S. to develop the first Vietnamese speaking software, which helped the blinds in Vietnam to be able to use computers. The two professors were given the awards of “Information Technology Heroes” in 2003 for their works that supported the community of the blinds.

“Computer technology becomes the bridge that leads students into the fascinating world of colors and brightens up their futures with the intellectual torch,” said Nguyen Thi Kieu Oanh, a member of the shelter. In fact, with a regular computer and some time to set up several specialized software, the blinds could freely use the computer for different purposes from drafting and printing paper to searching for information on the Internet, listening to music, watching movies, and social networking. Moreover, with several simple steps, the blinds could activate the apps that specializes for them set up on the touching devices of Apple and Samsung such as Iphone, Ipad, tabloids as well as could function the devices skillfully.

Thanks to computers, their learning become simpler and easer. Students could write down notes and take exams during class. Teachers who do not know Braille also could teach students and monitor their academic progress. Moreover, students could also use Internet to search for information and readings that the book source in Braille is missing. Besides, computers also bring a plenty of job opportunities for the blinds such as typewriting, office work, translating work, etc.

Furthermore, Thien An Shelter has contributed to the community free specialized softwares such as MATA Talking Dictionary – English- Vietnamese dictionary, MATA Braille Translator – automatic translating words into Braille, MATA Keyboard – providing guidance for computer usage and writing skill for students. Currently, the shelter also wish to develop a learning program that guides students the usage of touching devices as well as create apps that supports Vietnamese on IOS and Android to serve the Vietnamese blinds.

“Life never closes all the door at you.” The achievements in computer technology and what Thien An Shelter is doing contribute in creating a wide path, a firm bridge that lead visually impaired children confidently walked into the life.
