MUSIC GIVES WINGS TO DREAMS

MUSIC GIVES WINGS TO DREAMS

We have to admit that music is a passion, a top entertaining channel, and a friendly friend of many visually impaired people.

Many often think that most of the blinds have the talents for music. In reality, it is completely untrue. However, we have to admit that music is a passion, a top entertaining channel, and a friendly friend of many visually impaired people. In the educational field for the blinds, beside choosing music to advance their skills in music and developing a career for those who have talents for music, music is also a great support that helps them to gain essential skills as well as to nurture beautiful values for their souls and their morals.

Music is one of the subjects that receive a special attention in the educational program of Thien An Shelter. Here, all of the students have the opportunities to take basic music classes, to read music notes in Braille, to learn vocal music, as well as to play musical instruments that are both modern and traditional such as electronic keyboards, piano, guitar, drums, monochord, zither, flute, vintage guitar, etc. Here, Professor Nguyen Quoc Phong, the Shelter’s director, directly teaches the basic music classes. Based on the guidance, monitoring of the teachers, students will be classified into groups of those who have a true talents and who have a mediocre talent for music.

For those who are promising, the Shelter provides the opportunities to help them reach their full potentials. The students such as Nguyen Thien Tam, Vu Cong Hao, Ha Van Dong left the Shelter and pursue professional careers of playing instrument, teaching music as well as singing. Others such as Nguyen Vinh Phuoc, the number one electronic keyboards player of Thien An Shelter, Vong Minh Nhi, Dao Van Thom, Dinh Cong Luat, and the twins Xuan Hai and Xuan Dai demonstrate real talents for music, and currently they are chasing after their music dreams. Vong Quang Ky, a student from Bien Hoa, followed the footsteps of Cong Hao and Van Dong to attend Ho Chi Minh City Cultural Arts College, and in the first school year 2013-2014, Ky was recognized as an excellent student by the school. For the rests of the students, although they do not clearly show a talent for music, with a suitable education method, they still have the opportunities to learn essential knowledge and basic skills to recognize the values of music, build confidence in singing, play some music instruments at certain levels, and together form a small band that could perform music at the Shelter or at outside social events.

The band of Thien An Shelter could take the responsibility for music performances in religious rituals, social events with the social work organizations in the remote areas to provide mental support for the leprosy and AIDS patients, as well as to socialize with normal students at high schools and colleges. Moreover, the shelter has been given many awards in music competitions for the blinds. The vibrant music and singing sounds create a fresh and lively atmosphere at the shelter everyday. Music is like a refreshing stream that always flows, freshens, and nurtures the students’ souls, as well as spreads the liveliness to many other people, including those who help them and friends who visit the shelter. Music truly becomes the magical wings that lift their dreams up high. Together we believe and pray that in a near future, those beautiful dreams will come true in their lives.
